III a     Jan CLAYS

filius Aernout Clays (II a) and Catharina Buysse

= Waarschoot 22/10/1623
x Maldegem 5/11/1647 Susanna De Smet
† Maldegem 12/7/1662

Jan was the eldest son of Aernout Claeys and Catharina Buysse.  He was baptized on 22 October 1623. His godfather was his uncle Joannes Clays and his godmother was Anna De Pau.  Anna was the wife of Andreas Braet.  He was not yet in his twenties when he moved with his parents the Van Praet Farm in Adegem, where his help was undoubtedly appreciated.

Jan got married on 5 November 1647 in Maldegem.  His bride was Susanna De Smet, the daughter of Gillis De Smet and Tanneken Matthijs.  She was the widow of Pieter Wouters by whom she had three children.  A few days before, on 23 October, a marriage contract had been agreed to.  There were the usual clauses concerning who would inherit the land and the other things they owned in case their marriage remained childless.  Also part of the agreement was the promise that Aernout, the bridegroom's father, would pay for the wedding feast and that the bridegroom would receive 50 sheep, 2 cows and a horse. (16)

For those interested, here is more information on Gillis De Smet.

Around 1659 Suzanne and Jan sold their part in the brewery inherited from Gillis, to their stepbrother Lieven and his brothers and sisters.

On 12 July 1662 Jan died in Maldegem not yet 40 years old !  His estate reckonings closed with a positive balance of 613 pounds and seven shillings.  And that is without counting his land and other properties, most of which he had inherited, partly from his father and from his mother's side, and partly from his brother Denijs who had died childless and partly from Suzanna's parents. (18)

Suzanna bore Jan three children.  She died in Maldegem in June 1677.  Her estate reckonings also closed with a positive balance. (19)
