Emiel was a Customs Officer first in Antwerp and then in Ghent.

During WW II he spent two years in Germany and in Austria as a prisoner of war.  Near Eeklo on his way back home after the capitulation of Belgium he was stopped by the Germans together with many other Belgian soldiers.  They were taken to Germany and on to Austria.  Emiel was registered in the infamous Stalag XVIIB camp with registration number 14842.  This camp was near Krems and Gneisendorf in Austria. He was also in Julbach and in Linz where Hitler himself spent most of his youth.  But Emiel was used as slave labour there in the Goring Werke where among other things chemicals and steel were manufactured for the Nazis.  He arrived back in Antwerp on 15 December 1940.  A diary which he kept during his captivity is now in the hands of his son.

After the war he worked as a traveling salesman until he retired.  Gilberta had a small shop in Ledeberg until after the birth of their second son.  She then became a devoted housewife. They lived the rest of their lives in Ledeberg.

The marriage of Emiel and Gilberta ended after more than 60 years with the demise of Emiel in Ghent on 16 November 1991.  Gilberta left us on 4 February 2000.

They had 2 sons:

  1. Bernard Leonard Noë was born in Hoboken (Antwerp) on 7 January 1931.  He died in St.-Amandsberg (near Ghent) on 13 September 1938 of the croup (a form of laryngitis).

  2. Freddy Noë is marrried.  They have 2 daughters and one granddaughter.

We are most grateful to Mr. Freddy Noë for much of the information and for all the pictures we have here on Bernardus Aloysius and his descendants.
