My Big Brother

When I was born he was aged just two
But we bonded together as brothers do.
He helped me when I learnt to talk
And he held my hand when I tried to walk.
I started school and he was there
Showing everyone his tender care.
We joined the cubs and scouts
He taught me all the ins and outs.
We played in woods and fished our stream
It's so long ago; it's like a dream.
He was just fourteen when came the war
Soon things would change as never before.
When the bombs came down until all clear
He fought many fires and showed no fear.
At just eighteen he went away to a far off land,
They fought their way to the Ardennes
Where they made a gallant stand.
He was with two mates on that battlefield
When the shells rained down and the three were killed.
I had no chance to say goodbye
But I cried a river 'till my tears ran dry.
I knew it then; there could be no other
To take the place, of my dear brother.
The years have gone by, now I'm old and grey
But I still think of him each night and day.
Yes it was true; there could be no other
To take the place, of my dear brother.
