Belzele's 2005 Day of the Horses

On 10 July 2005 we spent a most enjoyable Sunday at Belzele's 8th Day of the Horses.

By 10 o'clock the sun had broken through and a record number of people had taken their places in a great variety of horse drawn vehicles. All was ready for Belzele's 2005 edition of the great Cart Horse Parade.

In the afternoon there were games, on horse back of course. Who would have believed some of these great big animals would be afraid to get wet... or afraid to get into deep water ? Then there was the great De Brabander Horse Show. You'll find some of our pictures of all this here.

And finally there were the Gipsy Horses with their incredible stunts and their barrel race. It's surely safer and more comfortable to just sit on that horse and go at a quieter pace. Click here for some of our pictures and here for their website.

Believe me, everyone enjoyed it all tremendously. Three cheers for the organizers. They did a great job. Many thanks to them all.

And to close the day in style we thought we'd go and sup at De Gouden Kroon (The Golden Crown) in Ertvelde. And I assure you we didn't regret our choice: we received a truly divine supper, melon with ham and a glass of the better Port, delicious lamb chops, with vegetables and what they call French fries. (Except that until fairly recently French chefs looked askance shall we say, at the humble "pommes frites", chips in other words. Guide Michelin or not, snobby French chefs or whatever, more and more restaurants in France are catching on: they propose chips because—something we in Belgium have known for a long long time—everyone likes them.)
